Double JJ RV Park in rothsbury, Michigan is a staple in our summer camping planning for the past couple years. Being as this campground/ranch is about 5 and a half hours from our house, we plan extra days to enjoy the trip to it's fullest. The past couple years we've gone for 5 nights/6 days.
We typically arrive on a Thursday and stay until Tuesday. What is really nice about this campground is there is a lot to do within the ranch, but there is also a lot to do within a short drive. The Double JJ trip has been discussed with us and friends soo much that almost a dozen families have joined us there four our annual trip in the past.
Overall Rating & Cost
Campground Rating
This campground gets a 4.5 campers from me. What would push them over the edge and get a 5 would be if they opened the saloon for later hours and opened some of the shops that they have in the back forty. Having those shops open would be an AWESOME addition!
Costs
- Campground: Average Nighly Rate: $45 - $65 (rates for rentals are slightly higher)
Camping Lots
The Back Fourty (where the RV Park/camping is) has camping lots, cabin rentals and tee-pee rental locations. In the past, we have only used the camping lots, this year will be our first time having friends or family stay at the RV park. The camping lots area is very wooded, but you can fit most size travel trailers and full size RV's in the lots. But if you have a large RV/camper, you will want to let them know that when you are reservating your lot. As with most campgrounds, they have the usual full hook up, water/electric and primitive spots available.
RV Rental & Cabin Rentals
Double JJ has Cabin Rentals, but we did not use them. They are in the Back Fourty near the campers. So if you have friends that want to go but don't want to tent and don't have a camper, the cabin rentals would be a good alternative.
Amenities
Amenities is the area where Double JJ Ranch stands out for us. Just in the Back Fourty you have a sweet/gift shop, saloon/restaurant, park, mini-water park, horse back rides and more. There are also cowboy shows that go on at the 'town square'. In addition, if you stay in the Back Fourty, you're only a 5 minute drive from the rodeo, golf course, in-door water park and Lewis Farm.
Double JJ Ranch is also within 30 minutes from Spring Lake where you can rent boats, jet ski's and a host of other activiies.
Staff
For the most part, the staff is always very friendly and helpful. This year we had an issue with one of our campsites and although it was a very busy weekend, they were able to move us and resolve the issue quickly. We have never had a poor experience in dealing with the staff from checking to meals, entertainment to checkout. The staff is very well trained and always there to assist guests. (please note, we have never stayed overnight at the resort, so this post is primarily about the staff we encountered while camping there over the years)
Rothbury, Michigan Local Attractions
We spent one day checking out the local town of Santa Clause, Indiana. Here is my take on the local attractions. Please note, there is a local golf course, but I did not have a chance to play it, so it will be left out of the review.
Lewis Farm Market and Petting Zoon (click here to visit website)
Lewis Farm is a 700 acre farm in New Era, Michigan. Family owned and operated, with home grown produce, fruit orchards, market with gifts and goodies, and a bakery. Enjoy lots of activities for family fun from May through October each year … and a petting farm with a wide variety of animals and birds! - They have great home grown products and we purchsase some every year when we go!
Spring Lake, Michigan
Spring Lake is a really cool place to visit. As mentioned earlier, we stay in Michigan an extra day so that we can go to Spring Lake on Mondays when everyone else is back to work. It's the perfect time to rent jet ski's, take a tour of the sand dunes and visit the beachs and shops.
